How to control a simulation
You control simulation runs on the
Simulation tab using the Start tab bar or using the keyboard.
Start

Starts the simulation when it is in its initial state or was paused or stopped. The simulation will run until the specified simulation end is reached or until you manually pause the simulation. When you restart the simulation after pausing it, it will continue from the point at which it was paused. If you stopped the simulation and restart it, it will automatically be reset and starts again from the beginning.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + Space
With the keyboard shortcut, you trigger the following actions in the various states:
Status | Action |
|---|---|
Initialized | Start simulation |
Running | Pause simulation |
Paused | Continue simulation |
Stopped | Reset and restart simulation |
Pause/Continue

Pauses the running simulation or continues the simulation from the point where it was paused. While the simulation pauses, you can access result variables and statistics.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Space
With the keyboard shortcut, you trigger the following actions in the various states:
Status | Action |
|---|---|
Initialized | Start simulation |
Running | Pause simulation |
Paused | Continue simulation |
Stopped | - |
Single step

Performs a single step. You can perform single steps while the simulation is paused.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Right arrow
With the keyboard shortcut, you trigger the following actions in the various states:
Status | Action |
|---|---|
Initialized | Perform single step |
Running | - |
Paused | Perform single step |
Stopped | - |
Time step

Performs a time step. You can perform time steps while the simulation is paused.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Down arrow
With the keyboard shortcut, you trigger the following actions in the various states:
Status | Action |
|---|---|
Initialized | Perform time step |
Running | - |
Paused | Perform time step |
Stopped | - |
Reset

Resets the simulation to its initial state. You can reset a simulation only if you have paused it or if the simulation has reached its end.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Backspace.
Execution is the same regardless of the status.
Stop

Terminates the simulation run.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Space
With the keyboard shortcut, you trigger the following actions in the various states:
Status | Action |
|---|---|
Initialized | - |
Running | Stop simulation |
Paused | Stop simulation |
Stopped | - |
Animation speed

Controls the animation speed. Enter the speed as a percentage of the maximum speed (100%), either directly or by clicking the arrow keys.
Keyboard shortcut: Alt + Up arrow or Alt + Down arrow
Animation active

Switches animation on or off for the current simulation run. Animation depends on the settings that were defined for the simulation. The name of the menu changes depending on whether the animation is switched on or off.
